Hillwalker Info

Hillwalker Lite

Information and routes for a single region.

Hillwalker is an interactive guide to the hills and mountains of the British Isles. Each Hillwalker product* includes walks and climbs, photographs, traditional and folk music from the region, and often video clips, articles and interesting information about the hills in the area.

Every Hillwalker program comes with the ISYS Outdoors Vector Map of Great Britain, which can be drawn at any scale from showing the whole of the British Isles to the detail of a route up Beinn Eighe. A topographical overlay can be plotted on the Vector Map, adding height cues and greatly increasing the detail of coastlines and rivers.

On the Vector Map, you can plot the built-in routes, or create your own with the powerful route editing system, which allows you to create routes by clicking waypoints on the map. You can generate a route profile, which gives a good idea of the climbs and descents along the route, and the route planner automatically estimates the time to complete each leg based on your personal walking speed. Once your route is finished, you can download it to your GPS.

Hillwalker MAX programs come with full Ordnance Survey Landranger mapping for the appropriate area, on which routes can also be plotted. Hillwalker Info and Hillwalker Lite will integrate with MapWise products to add mapping, either the aforementioned Landranger mapping, or more detailed Explorer maps. It is, of course, cheaper to buy MAX than to buy the corresponding Info then buy the mapping separately. All three ranges will integrate with PhotoMaps, for interesting aerial views of the hills you plan to climb.

All maps can be viewed in 3D, with configurable rotation, tilt and sunlight angle. All product functions work the same regardless of which map you're viewing, and most operations are performed globally - you can plot a route on a 3D map, with leg lines conforming to the curves of the terrain, and when you open any other map, the route will automatically be plotted on it as well.

Also included is the Personal Log system, which allows you to record walk and expedition dates for yourself and up to ten friends, with plenty of space to enter details of your route, flora and fauna spotted, the weather, an expedition diary, or anything else you might wish. Once you have entered dates in the Log, you may elect to show which hills have been climbed on the map (or, for those with a tick against almost every hill in the book, which have not been climbed!) You can also add your own photographs and diagrams - a slideshow of other peoples' conquests of the hills is all very well, but it's even better when the photos are your own!

Other features include panorama views and bearing tables, which help you figure out which hills you can see from a summit; the ability to print routes, maps, information, panoramas and bearing tables; and the hill-finding quiz and musical slideshow for rainy days.

All HillWalker programs also integrate with each other, allowing you to launch one program and access photographs, music, routes and hill information from any other installed programs.

* Hillwalker Lite, which covers areas not covered in full by Hillwalker , only comes with routes and some photographs.
